” Palimpsest is inspired by Vilém Flusser’s book Gestures, especially the chapter on the gesture of writing. Flusser argues that this gesture, once tied to the hand, is being overtaken by mechanical and then computational ways of “writing” that no longer need the hand at all. The piece follows that arc, from handwriting through the typewriter and keyboard to the generative system. The score reflects this too, drawing on graphic notation, including words calligraphed by the composer’s own hand.”
